NextGen's EHR Mobile Application

E-mail Print

iPhone EHR ApplicationEarly this year NextGen announce (April, 2009), that they are developing and beta-testing and EHR Mobile application that can be used on moble devices such as the iPhone. This will allow user to connect wirelessly to the NextGen EHR to gain access and manage important patient information. From receint descusion from the NextGen Yahoo usergroup there seems to be some mixed emotions about this new idea.

From a tecchie side I can see why people would be excited for this to happen. It new and something that NextGen user have never been able to do in the past. Imagine physicians being able to access patient charts while at dinner or driving through town. You will also be able to lookup patient medication and allergy information, lab orders and results, and much more. That is a huge tool that could really benifit the busy life of a medical provider. But then there are those that bring up the issues of security and privacy. As we are all aware, NextGen take HIPPA regulations very seriously and Im sure that the new mobile application will take all of those into consideration.

Personally, as a developer - I hope to get the chance in the near future and test the NextGen EHR Mobile application and further build powerfully templates that could be used injuction with it.

What are your thought on this new product? Are you going to be first in-line to download it and get it implemented in your practice, or are you going to sit back and listen to the feedback?

I like the idea that the chart can be mobile. I wonder if the medical centers and clinics will have the IT horse power to really make that idea a reality. Just getting the wireless infrastructure can be costly and a time consuming task. Typically that kind of IT resource does not exist in most clinics and NextGen sales teams will not highlight that requirement. That may lead to some frustration by providers and thus a sour note to some great new technology.
